I know it's late for Star Wars Day but

let's be real, every day of my life is Star Wars Day. Happy May the Fourth/Revenge of the Fifth everybody, let's celebrate with some of the smol gay son.

And the space princess of course.

I have a ton, like seriously a ton of doodles from this semester, hardly any of which I've had time to take pictures of. But there will be lots, as soon as finals are over and we're moved into our apartment yay!

I'm in Outlander hell

We watched the entire first season over the last week of Interim and the first few days of break. So good. The last two episodes were really difficult to watch, but it was all very well done and also Jamie is hot, so I spent the rest of break painting a portrait of him, one of the most realistic I'd attempted in a while. Blending those darker shadows was hard, but rewarding in the end.

The initial linework.

Anyways that's what we've been up to around here. I'm starting my senior project as well - an interactive visual novel for which I write the script, draw all the art, and compose and record the score. The only thing I'm not doing on my own from scratch is the programming, which Matt is helping me with because he's the best (and because it gives him an excuse to learn Java). Will update on that stuff as it develops.

hark, a new dnd character

for Evan's campaign this semester! We've only played one session so far, but I love Evan's DMing and it's a super fun group. I flipped through the 5e manual and decided to build a Tiefling paladin, which seems like a complete oxymoron but isn't really because as a paladin you can totally take an oath of vengeance instead of pledging yourself to a deity or an ideal. Rockin. So here's Shalai, thief, hermit, paladin.

As a youth he was in a thieving crew with a few close friends and his younger brother. The crew was caught stealing cargo from one of the ships of a very wealthy and powerful merchant, who had the rest of the crew killed before Shalai's eyes before sending him into exile. As her guards threw him out of the city, he spat an oath of vengeance at her. The next thirty years were spent training in the mountains alone, beating up trees and angsting as one does. Then the Terraclysm ripped the continent in half and he looked out of his cave one morning at a sheer cliff dropping straight down to an ocean that hadn't been there the day before. That decided it for him - it was time to go back to the port city of his birth, find the merchant, and kill her. At the start of our campaign, he's been hiding in the city for several months, doing reconnaisance, sheltering one of the other party members who's being pursued by mysterious shadow creatures. By the end of that first session, Shalai had his hiding place compromised by the rest of the (young and stupid) party, jumped headlong through an interdimensional portal, demanded information from an ancient and powerful being, confronted the literal lion-monster the merchant turned out to be, fought a chain demon shackled to the long-dead corpse of his younger brother, beheaded that corpse, and held it in his arms as it crumbled to dust. Y'know, the standard first session of a campaign type things.

So that's Shalai. Stay tuned for more of his adventures.

Also me and Matt played Undertale and I have Feelings about it.

the new space baes

I started this over the winter break but I woke up this morning sick enough to skip class and decided to finally finish it.

Aaaah the movie was so fun and the new trio is so cute! Also I just love the fact that everyone's talking about Star Wars nonstop, like it's suddenly this universal conversation topic and everyone's got theories and opinions and there's this huge resurgence of excitement about this fantastic, ridiculous, crazy universe I love and care about so much and it's really just the best. I can walk into any room, get on any public transport, strike up a discussion in any elevator, and Star Wars will invariably come up. We've all been revealed as the huuuge nerrrds we truly are and I love it.

got an A in my studio art class

Here are some of the pieces I used for my portfolio.

The Cellar in Winter

The Haunting

Warm Neutral Cool

Briar

The Bone

Never Die When I'm Dead

Not to Be

If You Wait

All Soul's Night

 Breast

Leaving Earth

There are more pieces I was proud of, but I didn't get around to taking pictures of all of them. Anyway, it was a good class in that I turned out a lot of solid pieces, though I didn't really learn too much that I didn't already know. Which is fair, since it was supposed to be a foundations course.

I have so much more art to post! If I don't just sleep straight through the rest of this break, I'll do it.

been awhile

since I posted any MSG, hasn't it. Well, here.

Recently I was trying out a wardrobe redesign for Suvoi, since we're rolling with the "sandpunk" thing now. I imagine the Peregrine would wear loose, billowy clothing that they could easily batten down at the ankles, wrists and neck during sandstorms. What Suvoi's got on here would be more like oasis wear, or half-dressed in her tent - bare arms and feet, loose hairstyle, not something you'd go out in.

Here's a scene Giddy and I sort of skirted around but never wrote. Erik's handler, the brutish Ruska, takes his whip to the "stupid boy" one too many times for little Suvoi to handle.

Aaaand look at where that got her. But honestly, I'm glad I finally finished this one up. It was haunting me.

I've actually been drawing a ton, but it's all just little doodles in my class notes. Will probably post a whole bunch after finals are done this week. Speaking of which, omg kill me.

ALSO STAR WARS COMES OUT TOMORROW AAAAAAAH

happy N7 day!

There's a new Andromeda trailer out and I'm bawling! Surprise!

Here, have a Rain Shepard alone at the bar because it's Time To Be Sad!

Oh all the comrades that e'er I've had
Are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I've had
Would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

~ The Parting Glass, the Wailin' Jennys

Have also some dirty MShenko smut that someone on Tumblr requested (ref)!

And have it in pink!

Okay. Deep breaths. I'm okay now. Probably.

Red cosplay

Happy Halloween, poor neglected blog! Man, the last month has been absolutely nuts. This is by far the toughest semester I've had so far in terms of time commitments, but I did make the time this weekend to throw together a quick costume. (Me as Red, Matt as the boxer.)

Transistor is a fantastic game. The art is beautiful, the story is super sad, the combat is unique and cool, and the soundtrack is A+. There's nothing not to like. Go play it!

don't worry so much

Oh god I drew a sad. Because I will always be mad about Siri Tachi's death and I will always be mad about her not being in Clone Wars and I will always be especially mad about Satine because wtf.

She touched his cheek, and her hand fell. "Don't worry so much," she said.
Her eyes closed, and she was gone.

- Secrets of the Jedi, Jude Watson

Like excuse me, of all the deaths in the extended Star Wars universe, not a single other one hit me as hard as this one. Let me tell you why. Obi-Wan and Siri were friends all through their teenage years, ever since Obi-Wan returned to the Order after briefly leaving it for a "good cause" he got caught up in during a mission. She was disappointed in his "lack of commitment" and let him know it, and he worked hard to re-earn her approval. When they were in their last years of being Padawans together, they discovered that they felt something other than friendship for each other, but before the relationship could really go anywhere, Yoda and Qui-Gon reminded Obi-Wan of the Jedi Code and their stance on attachment. He and Siri agreed, painfully but resolutely, to think of each other as nothing more than comrades from that point forward. And they did so for many years, eventually going on missions together again and never reminding each other what they could have had. Even when Siri pretended to leave the Order to go undercover and take down a pirate gang, Obi-Wan kept a lid on his feelings. Their Padawans, Anakin and Ferus Olin, never got along well but knew their Masters shared a deep bond, the nature of which was not completely clear.

And then, during the Clone Wars, Siri was killed by a combination of blasterfire and a shuttle crash while taking down a bounty hunter. Obi-Wan, having come perilously close to the dark side as he stood over her killer, later reflects that while he mourns her loss deeply, he would never have been able to cope with losing her had the Jedi not forced them to separate all those years earlier, forced him to learn how to let her go.

You see why I'm upset.

Sads aside, I am chugging through Dragon Age: Origins and have the humans and elves on my side now, which I think means I'm... halfway through the game? It's a long game. But I love it.

some naughty Star Wars DnD for you

I like to imagine that if they ever got walked in on (and I'm sure it's happened, nobody knows the meaning of privacy on this darn ship), Hip would be the indignant unapologetic one and Leth would be the one who got all flustered.

Colored it just for fun.

I can't wait to get this campaign going again, Josh asked us for all our backstories so he could work them into the plot and it's gonna be tragic and great.

introducing... Cale Shepard

My new boy! And I think I managed to make a male Shepard that wasn't hideous!

He's so gay for Kaidan already and it's causing me a dilemma because I want to save Ashley for once but then this Shep can't romance Kaidan in ME3, which he really wants to do. And yes I know there are plenty of excellent straight romances available to me here, but honestly Shep wants what Shep wants and who am I to say any different. See now, if Tali, Miranda, or Jack (for god's sake) were bi, I would have started this playthrough with a female Shep and Ashley could have lived, but noo. I just do not want to play through the entirety of all three games trying to think like a straight male. Just not my idea of a fun time.

Also I still need to call Microsoft and see if I can get my saves and dlc back. I really, really hope I haven't lost Rain Shepard forever. My poor child.

whatever happens, I'll remember this

I've literally been meaning to draw this scene for like ten years no joke.

Something broke free inside him. He felt filled up with this feeling, even though he couldn't name it. He couldn't dare to name it. Yet it was suddenly more real than anything in his life. More real than the danger they were in. More real than the Jedi.

"Siri..."

Her voice was a whisper. "I feel it, too."

Secrets of the Jedi, Jude Watson

Because what better time to realize you love someone when you're trapped together on a ship that's rigged to explode when it drops out of hyperspace, right? Good lord, it's been so many years since I read the Jedi Apprentice books and I still have so many feelings...

the bastard and the viper

I keep finding drawings of Erik and Suvoi that I've given up on and abandoned partway through.

You will probably be getting more Mass Effect next because I got my own Xbox and started a new Shep, woo! I do hope I can figure out how to retrieve my old data though because I will miss poor GingerShep terribly if I can't get her back,. *tear*

Dustwalker

I wrote a thing! Holy balls. I actually wrote it quite a while ago and then forgot about it, but I was cleaning out my computer today, found it by accident, did a couple quick edits, and decided it was good enough to post.

“Well, folks,” says Rosie, slinging her pack over her shoulder, rattling the fresh shells in their cardboard box, “hinges fixed up good as new. Thanks for everything. Probably won’t be seeing you around, but you got enough water for a while yet, you’ll be fine. Keep an eye on that head wound.”

“You be careful now,” the husband calls from the back room. His voice is thin with pain, dry with dust.

Rosie tips her wide-brimmed hat, though she knows the couple in the back bedroom can’t see her, and reaches for the doorknob.

From outside, something slams into the door. The sun-blistered boards, warped by the Arizona heat, crack like gunpowder.

“Aw, you’re kidding me,” says Rosie, bolting the door shut.

A leathery dried hand punches through the wood just to the left of Rosie’s head.

In a series of movements smooth from repeated practice, Rosie takes a step back, swings her rifle up against her shoulder, sights down the barrel for an instant and fires.

A howl from outside. The hand retracts abruptly.

“Goddammit, Jerky, I just went and fixed this door!” Rosie yells. To be fair, she’s the one who kicked it down to begin with, but she fixed it up good after, so that’s all fine.

There’s a bit of shuffling on the other side of the door. A stray beam of late afternoon sunlight slants in through the jagged hole in the boards. The light cuts into segments as more of them – how many more, Rosie can’t say – pass back and forth between the sun and the hole. In the back bedroom, the Japanese woman is sobbing quietly. Glass shatters. The woman’s sobs spike into screams.

“Get in here, both of you!” Rosie calls without taking her eyes off the hole in the door. Funny how that late golden sun can still remind her of drinking sweet tea on the porch with her husband at a time like this. Maybe it’s his jacket, too, that calls up the memory. It’s big on her, the sleeves almost covering her fingertips unless she rolls them up, but the cracked tan leather is shiny with age and infused with the musk of his favorite tobacco. He’d have one of those fat cigars dangling from his lips in the late afternoon, the smoke shot through with gold as it ringed his head. She’d hated that smell, partly because it was vile, partly because she knew those damn cigars were killing him. But the smell is comfortable to her in its familiarity.

Thank the Lord the cancer got him before the leathers came.

The young couple stumbles into the front room, supporting each other. The husband cradles his bandaged head with one hand and rubs his wife’s shoulder with the other, trying to quiet her. She’s crying breathlessly, thick dark hair clinging to her wet cheeks, gasping over and over in lilting English, “We going to die, we going to die, we going to die…” over the sound of more breaking glass in the other room.

“Jesus Christ,” mutters the husband, sinking into a chair at the kitchen table.

Rosie lines up another shot and squeezes the trigger just before a shadow blocks that lonely beam of sun. A short, rage-distorted cry. “Reload this,” she says, tossing the rifle to the bewildered woman, who fumbles and drops it. Rosie strides past her and hauls the man upright by the arm. “Help me with the table. Lean it right up against the doorway – come on – and brace it with the chairs – come on!”

He’s backing away, holding his sobbing wife, watching Rosie get a shoulder under the heavy kitchen table and wrestle it up on end. “Don’t bother,” he says, toneless, staring.

She glances back at him, exasperated. “The hell d’you mean, don’t bother?”

“They’re coming in. There’s no stopping them.”

She sees another hand worming in through the hole in the front door. “Then reload my gun.” She can’t fortify this room on her own, not fast enough to save them. If they can just get both doors solidly blocked, they stand a chance. She starts shoving chairs against the table, but they’re spindly and don’t weigh much and the table still wants to lean inward. Someone’s gonna have to hold it.

“There’s no point,” says the husband quietly.

Rosie whirls on him, seizes him by the upper arm, and thrusts him bodily against the table, his back hitting the wood. She’s a good head and a half shorter than him, but he’s weak. Starving. “Goddammit, man, shut your mouth! You’re scaring the missus. Now make yourself useful and hold that table steady.”

The woman’s trembling and weeping in the center of the room, hugging herself, the empty rifle at her feet. Rosie sweeps it up, jams fresh shells into it from the cardboard box. “What is y’all’s problem?” she says, disgusted. These people are young and strong. They should be the optimistic ones in this situation. They have a hell of a lot of living to do. Here she is, a stumpy old lady in her late sixties, the dark skin of her face lined deeply with sun creases around the eyes and mouth, hair gone white and frizzy, pink palms rough with farm callouses. Her friends her age are all moving in with their kids or being shipped off to retirement homes. And here she is, tromping around the valley, apparently the only person with enough balls to beat off the leathers. She fires twice through the hole in the door, reloads, moving automatically around the crying woman in the middle of the room.

Here she is, trying to save lives because these are lives that can be saved.

She’d walked into the hospital in broad daylight with the rifle tucked under her husband’s duster. The dispassionate metal was a long bar of cold that chilled her through her clothes. She made it halfway down the cancer ward before an orderly noticed the gun barrel poking out the bottom of her coat and called security. They tackled her right outside her husband’s room. “Can’t you see he’s suffering?” she’d bellowed, swinging the rifle butt blindly and with such ferocity that they two burly security guards had been forced to duck out of the way. “Can’t you see he’s ready to go to the Lord?” She’d imagined she could hear him calling out for her from inside the sterile gray room – Rosie, save me, Rosie, set me free, it hurts, I can’t breathe, Rosie, I want to go home – and it made her furious. How dare they stop her from ending his pain? He’d asked her to. He was ready. He’d suffered enough.

In the end, it didn’t matter because he died later that night while she was in jail. The hospital called the warden, who sent the tiny town jail’s only guard down the short hallway to tell her, through the bars of her cell, that her husband had passed away about half an hour before. She’d said nothing, only rolled over on her creaky narrow cot to face the weeping cement wall.

Another hand claws its way through the widening hole in the door. Rosie slings her rifle strap over her shoulder, reaches out, grips the grasping hand above and below the wrist. She twists, quickly and hard. The wrist snaps. She lets it dangle by the tendons. “Well, if y’all ain’t planning on helping, at least shut the door behind me. And seal it up from inside. Block that hole with something. Bye now.”

“They’ll kill you,” the husband says flatly. “They’ll kill us all.”

She heaves back the bolt and flings the door wide, yanking the creature with its arm still stuck through the hole into the waiting butt of her rifle. She smashes its skull against the doorframe three or four times, until the weathered wood is stained gray with old brain matter, then kicks the twitching corpse down the porch steps. Steps outside. Glances over her shoulder. Neither of the young couple have moved, the man still slumped in his chair, the woman hugging herself in the middle of the room. With an irritated sigh, Rosie shuts the door firmly behind her.

She makes it almost to the front gate, striding through the fine shifting dust, blasting two more leathers on her way, before a shaky voice cries after her, “Wait!”

Rosie turns, one hand on the gate latch. The young woman hurries down the steps, clutching a broad kitchen knife in her white-knuckled fist, and skirts around the two half-decayed bodies in the yard. “I come with you. My husband, he not protect me.” Her cheeks are still wet, but her mouth is set and determined. Dust clings to her eyelashes.

Studying the woman’s face, Rosie hitches her pack higher and unlatches the gate. It swings open with the shriek of rusted metal, carving a quarter circle into the loose dust on the ground. “What’s your name, honey?”

A hoarse scream from inside the house. Wood shattering.

The woman’s voice is firm even as her lip trembles. “Aiko.”

“Well, Aiko,” Rosie says, leading her out of the yard. “I can teach you how to survive, but I can’t hold the knife for you, understand? You’re the one protecting you now.”

She nods, once, with a little affirmative noise. “Hm.”

Rosie tugs her bandanna up around her nose and mouth, partly to block the blowing grit, partly to hide her smile.

Animals (Maroon 5) - Mass Effect

This KP-draws-to-the-radio turned out kinda dirty. Whoops (not whoops).

Baby, I'm preying on you tonight
Hunt you down eat you alive
Just like animals, animals, like animals

Maybe you think that you can hide
I can smell your scent from miles
Just like animals, animals, like animals

So what you trying to do to me
It's like we can't stop we're enemies
But we get along when I'm inside you

Holy wow I am invested in this ship.

space dads and biotic catfights

Holy cow, I said I was going to draw something and then I actually drew it! Amazing! Cortez and Vega with their adopted war orphans during the rebuilding of Earth. Being dads.

Also this quick sketch got out of hand. Angry Miranda backing Jack up against a wall and threatening to smash her face in, Jack expecting an underhanded knee to the gut...

... well, wasn't quite prepared for that...

... oh wait -

And then they do a sex against the wall of the hold. The end.

Stuff's kind of weird around here right now with the whole divorce mess, but I will say that we did finish season 2 of The 100 and there were indeed gays, although much less than I was expecting considering how much Tumblr was freaking out about it, but it was still a good time. Also, Matt reminded me that I could turn the difficulty down on Dragon Age: Origins whenever so I did and I finally made it out of Redcliffe Castle, praise the Maker. I might actually finish this game before I die. Oh oh and also, I bought the trilogy of Mass Effect novels the other day and I'm most of the way through the second one now. What delightful trash honestly.
